The President of the Republic of Slovenia receives the President and Vice President of the Slovene-Gottscheer Association "Peter Kosler".
Ljubljana, January 9, 2007.
The President of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr. Janez Drnovšek, today received the leaders of the Slovene-Gottscheer Association "Peter Kosler" - Mr. Erik Krisch, President and Mr. Hubert Kosler, Vice President. On this occasion, the two officials of this Association presented the President of the Republic with a recording of Gottscheer songs performed by the vocal group Cantate Dominum, recently produced as a CD by the Verein Association with generous support from the Slovene Ministry of Culture.
During the conversation, the guests explained to Dr, Drnovšek their 12 year effort to preserve the Gottscheer culture, among it the restoration and reconstruction of over 20 monuments, sacred objects and other religious items. As especially important, the guests sketched out their activity to preserve the dialect of the Gottscheer-German, their cultural and artistic tradition and described the effort of their Association to propagate and maintain an awareness of this tradition as an important part of the century’s long history of Slovenia.
Through support from the Republic, donations from individuals and grants from embassies of Germany and Austria, the publication of a book of folksongs in the Slovene language and the Gottscheer dialect was made possible in 2002.
In 2004, the Association published a book by Zdravko Troha titled “Gottscheer-German Partisans”. The two officials also described as very important the cooperation of their Association with the descendants of Gottscheer and Gottscheer-Germans living in North-America who, through private means, supported the recognition of Slovenia by the international community. According to the two leaders, the successes of the Association were possible only through active cooperation of the population and liberal support from the responsible local authorities. Helpful was also the support of relevant ministries and the embassies of Austria and Germany.
For the year 2007, the Association plans a photo exhibition titled "The Lost Heritage of the Gottscheer-Germans" in Vienna and Munich, produced through cooperation between the Association and prominent Slovene historians. The exhibition is promoted by the Republic of Austria and financially supported by the Government of Slovenia. Through joint effort between local authorities and individual communities, the Association will continue to work on the preservation of the culture of the Gottscheer-Germans.
President Dr. Drnovšek thanked his guests for the CD and the comprehensive report on the activity of the Association and voiced his appreciation for the effort and labor which the association, together with the remaining communities of Gottscheer-Germans in Slovenia, devoted to the propagation of an awareness of the cultural heritage of their ancestors. Ancestors, whose work and existence not always found the attention and appreciation of their State.
The democratic transparency and regulations of Slovenia, as a member of the European Community, demand the awareness and understanding for the preservation of a heterodox and colorful Slovene culture and national heritage. This will assure continuity and care in the future of a multifaceted and established Slovene State. Due to this, the Association will, also in the future, be able to successfully and with an even greater understanding care for the life-long deeds of their great example - Peter Kosler. Not only was he a Gottscheer-German but also a juror, scientist, notary, politician, one who encouraged the industrialization of Slovenia and was Chairman of the Statistics Society of Slovenia as well as an internationally recognized geographer. But he was also an extraordinary lover of his land and signatory of the Petition for a united Slovenia which, 155 years ago, appeared for the first time as a State on a map together with the colors of the Slovene flag. So said Dr. Drnovšek.
The President of the Republic wished his guests much success for the year 2007 and the future.
Also taking part at this reception of the President was the Ambassador of Austria, Dr. Valentin Inzko.
